Broken Windows Theory 3 - Shopping Cart

Another broken windows theory about how environments influence our decisions.

Ever gone to the supermarket and seen something like this?

What do you do with you cart?

The above situation is staged.

In this study 58% of people ditched their carts anywhere.

This compared with 30% of people who ditched them when the area was clean.

LESSON: If you are a trolley boy stay on top of things and people will do half the work themselves.

Extra! Extra!

However, almost my favourite bit of this part of the study is how they ensured that the ‘placed’ trolleys were not taken by entering participants: they smeared the handles with┬ápetroleum┬ájelly.

I can’t fit jelly strategy into on of Dan Lockton’s eight lenses.
